NEW YORK, NY – The New York Center for Art and Media Studies (NYCAMS) presents “Portrait of
Success as a Young Failure” – a exhibition addressing the redefinition of “Success” – curated by
bonnieKate. The opening event will occur on Thursday, April 19th 2007, 6 pm – 9 pm.

“Portrait of Success...” includes work from all over the United States, representing a sample of emergent
painters, video artists, writers, sculptors, and photographers. The exhibit delves into the semantics of the
(subjective) term “success”. In his novel “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”, James Joyce lets the
language of the story evolve with his main character, Stephen Dedalus, as Daedalus matures and attempts
to dispense with his creative fetters. Likewise “Portrait of Success as a Young Failure” is an attempt to
challenge our understanding of language and expression in the instance of “Success” and its fertile ground
for failure.

This “simulacrum of success” as Jean Baudrillard might have titled it, includes a sound installation by Ted
Hayes, theoretical writing expounding on the topic by Justin Rigamonti, and Laurel Dailey; video works by
Jennifer Mills, and Shyanne Hughes; digital paintings by Jessica Nelson; photography by Ira Lippke and
Laurel Dailey, as well as paintings by Jessica Faythe Marie and Emily Weiss. Sculptural works by Matt
Boyle and Zach Kleyn will be exhibited alongside drawings by Dan Swartz and Zach Kleyn. bonnieKate
has previously collaborated with Zach Kleyn, Jennifer Mills, Jessica Nelson, Ira Lippke, and Emily Weiss.

This exhibition is the culmination of the NYCAMS Post-Baccalaureate fellowship – awarded to
bonnieKate. Ms. Kate has had the opportunity to work along side the Director, John Silvis, on several
curatorial projects, as well as participate in NYCAM’s dynamic environment for young creative minds.

Please join us for the opening event in which the redefinition of “success” is explored. Feel free to contact
the curator for appointments.
